Competition

Many cooking videos compete on

  • Speed to value: how to prepare X in the quickest way,

    • eg. Gordon Ramsay

  • production quality: 4K crisp clear food closeups, ASMR,

    • Japanese, Korean silent food channels

  • Personality: humour entertainment

    • Joshua Weissman,

  • Creativity with food: unusual creations, recreations

    • Babish, futurecanoe

  • Science: explain why cooking works and how to optimize

    • Adam Ragusea

Where I compete is in recipe development, ingredients analysis, so it’s definitely not on speed to value, not personality, but more of a new edge by itself.

What I’m not so good at and need pro help
  • Describing the taste of food in a concise and full imagery way

Online course - Food Memory Journal: Document Flavors and Recipes (Sumayya Usmani)

  • memory of flavour, time, space, emotion = depth in writing

  • describe food using words that invoke memory

    • senses

      • taste: flavour, texture

      • smell: nasal feel

      • touch: fingers or hand feeling when eating the food

      • sight: shape, texture, colour

      • hear: sound of the food

    • write so that people can relate to it

      • nostalgia is a common relatable feeling

    • less is more

    • Flavour story

      • Who is the main character of your flavour story

      • How does your character feel by this experience

      • How does your character make others feel by this experience

      • What has been the symbolic change in the character’s life or feelings

      • Why does this story hold significance for you?

      • Why are you writing this story?
